On May 19, 2017 Ben Bahr, Ph.D., the William C. Friday Chair and Distinguished Professor of Microbiology and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke was recognized as the 2017 Oliver Max Gardner Award winner.
The award – the highest honor given by the University and established by the will of former Governor O. Max Gardner – recognizes faculty who have “made the greatest contribution to the welfare of the human race.”
Bahr received a 2014 CART Grant. In addition to delivering critical research results (and attracting follow-on funding) Bahr has been a true partner in the CART effort to cure Alzheimer’s through cutting edge research. The proximity of Bahr’s lab to Rotarians throughout North and South Carolina, has provided Bahr the opportunity to address more than 20 Rotary District Conferences and events since 2014. The Board of the CART Fund echoes the sentiment of the UNC Board of Governors, that Ben Bahr truly has made a tremendous contribution to the welfare of the human race.
The Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust Fund (CART) is a project of the Rotary Clubs of North America. Founded in 1995 in Sumter SC, CART provides financial support for Alzheimer’s research projects that are yet to be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research.
